Area Information - Somerset Wes

Locality

Somerset West is situated in the Helderberg area, about 50 kilometres east of Cape Town central city area, and 10 kilometres from Strand and Gordons Bay. The town is overlooked by the Helderberg (meaning "clear mountain"), a part of the Hottentots-Holland range of mountains.

The historic town of Stellenbosch is reachable via the R44 motorway (approx 18 km away).

The area between Somerset West and Stellenbosch encompasses many vineyards and wineries where visitors can sample and purchase wine. The oldest remaining vineyard in South Africa, Vergelegen, is situated on the outskirts of Somerset West.

Enjoy hiking on Helderberg Mountain, the Nature Reserve, shopping at Somerset Mall or golfing at one of our golf estates.

The town has a range of primary and secondary educational facilities including private schools.

Erinvale Golf Estate

Erinvale Golf Estate lies at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, overlooking Somerset West. Erinvale Golf Estate has 150 hectares of property but houses for sale take up only 50 hectares and the golf course was designed by Gary Player.

The Vergelegen Wine Estates

The oldest remaining vineyard in South Africa, lies just outside the town itself. The buildings on the estate constitute fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture.

The renowned wine estate offers a sunset vineyard , cellar tours, themed gardens and an upscale restaurant.
 

The Helderberg Nature Reserve

A 363 hectare natural wildlife preserve opened in 1964, contains a wide variety of smaller fauna (buck, tortoises and other reptiles) and outstanding specimens of indigenous flora such as protea and fynbos. Discover the hiking and biking trails on the mountain or picnic on the rolling lawns.

Somerset Mall

Somerset Mall is a 67,000 m2 shopping mall situated alongside the N2 freeway. The mall comprises 200 stores and 4,225 parking spaces. The Ster-Kinekor and a huge selection of restaurants and coffee shops provide plenty to do.
